How We're Changing the System

We’re using our collective voice to engage policymakers and advocate for fairer food systems that centre independent traders. Better Food Traders connects the dots across the UK-wide membership, and brings these issues to light for regional and national level change-makers. We strive to get the people who are making decisions about our food system to hear directly from the people running it.

We also create public-led awareness raising campaigns so that more people choose to support their locally-rooted independent food traders.

    Adventures in Local Food

    This summer, your holiday route is full of brilliant local food, you just need to know where to look. The Better Food Traders map shows you independent shops, bakeries, farm stalls, market traders, veg box schemes and local producers all along your route.

    Beyond the Basket

    Beyond the Basket explored what sets Better Food Traders apart from the supermarkets, looking past price and convenience to the wider impact of where we shop. By spotlighting key issues within the dominant supermarket system and directing shoppers to our retailer map, the campaign helped increase visibility for the sector and nudge more people towards consistent, independent and ethical shopping habits.

  • (2025) Advocacy

    Letter to the Chancellor

    Ahead of the Autumn Budget 2025, we brought together food, retail and SME organisations representing hundreds of thousands of businesses to write jointly to the Chancellor. The letter called for reduced Business Rates for smaller food retail premises, with the cost to be offset by higher business rates for large retail premises such as supermarkets. The changes we called for were successfully delivered in the Budget, and we continue to explore how changes to Business Rates at the local level can support more healthy, sustainable food retail.

    Supermarket Taglines

    This campaign took familiar supermarket phrases like “Taste the Difference” and “Feel Good About Food” and reframed the conversation around where our food really comes from. Through organic posts and paid adverts, we directed shoppers to our updated retailer map, helping people find their nearest Better Food Trader while showcasing the range of local, sustainable retailers across the UK.

    2-Minute Foundation Collaboration

    Working with the 2-Minute Foundation, we created some social posts pointing to specific campaigns within our work. Sharing these across both audiences helped us reach new people already engaged with environmental issues, and showed what’s possible when like-minded organisations work together.
